Neighborhood House received a $12,937 grant from The UPS Foundation, the
charitable arm of UPS (NYSE:UPS). The grant will be used for the Cheers
for Careers program at Neighborhood House.
The Cheers for Careers program provides a unique opportunity for
middle and high school teens to participate in job skills training. Cheers
for Careers takes teenagers residing in the Portland neighborhood
of Louisville through a structured process of experiential learning, which
enables them to obtain and sustain employment and provide service to others
in the community.
Pam Rice, Executive Director of Neighborhood House, is truly excited about
a partnership with UPS for our at-risk teens. “We are ‘Brown Fans’ at
Neighborhood House. UPS has provided fabulous volunteer support to us,”
says Rice. “Now, thanks to this grant, we can improve our capacity to
serve the at-risk youth of Portland and provide opportunities that can
literally change the direction of a teenager’s life.”
Established in 1951 and based in Atlanta, GA, The UPS Foundation identifies
specific areas where its backing clearly impacts social issues. In support
of this strategic approach, The UPS Foundation has identified the following
focus areas for giving: non-profit effectiveness, economic & global literacy,
encouraging diversity, community safety and environmental sustainability.
In 2007, The UPS Foundation distributed $46.4 million worldwide through
grants that benefit organizations or programs such as the Neighborhood
House Cheers for Careers program and provide support for building
stronger communities.
“UPS has a long-standing commitment to making communities all over the
world better by supporting organizations and engaging over 400,000 employees
in community service worldwide,” said Lisa Hamilton, president of The
UPS Foundation. “Together with nonprofit partners such as Neighborhood
House, we work to make a positive impact on the lives of people in need.”
